Good Eatin' On The Cheap!
Healthy Eatin'...On The cheap! I recently saw an amazing movie called The Garden. It basically chronicals the life of South
Central Los Angeles Farmers, who, from the ashes of the the LA riots; take a shabby uninhabited piece of land and cultivate
what would later become a lush 14-acre community garden- the largest of it's kind in the United States. After seeing the moving and experiencing the trials
and tribulations of these farmer's and their plight with the city trying to bulldoze them out, I was motivated to find out
more. I am a huge fan of buying locally and organic whenever possible. And my encounter with the South Central Farmer's
Cooperative made me realize exactly why.
I took a look at their website and realized that they have CSA (community
supported agriculture) boxes available for $15. You can simply order it online and pick it up at your local participating
farmer's market.
It turned out that there were
several markets near me where I could pick it up but I chose to go to Atwater Village Farmer's market in the beautifully ecclectic
Silverlake area of Los Angeles.
What a pleasant surprise! Organic everything! Collards, beets, swiss chard,
tomoatoes, okra, eggplant, yellow squash, spaghettis squash, zucchini squash, basil, mint, and so much more...a ton of produce
for only $15 bucks. It lasted me for 2 weeks and also made for some great juicing. The website for the SCFC is www. southcentralfarmers.com
However, for some additional resources on cheapskate ways to eat healthy, I have included this link for local markets in the greater LA area. Check them out. I also was informed by client Sandra that Paridise O has really great delivery of organic produce as well.
If you guys know of any others, please let me know and I will create a directory to put on the website. Until then. Be well and holistically in tune!
